Detroit Pistons’ Tolul Smith Makes His Move at Wise Guy’s Chess Club’s First Make Your Move Mondays

Detroit Pistons’ Tolul Smith joined Wise Guy’s Chess Club for the inaugural Make Your Move Mondays at the Nick Gilbert Way in Downtown Detroit, where he sat down for a few friendly chess matches with founder Arthur L. Johnson. The special appearance highlighted the power of chess to unite sports, community, and culture in the heart of Detroit.

The energy was electric in Downtown Detroit as Wise Guy’s Chess Club launched its very first Make Your Move Mondays at the beautiful Nick Gilbert Way, located outside of the new Hudson Building on Woodward Avenue. The evening brought together chess enthusiasts, families, community members, and curious passersby for an unforgettable experience centered around strategy, connection, and community.

One of the night’s biggest highlights was the special appearance by Detroit Pistons’ Tolul Smith, who stopped by to show his support and engage with the community by playing a few friendly chess matches with Wise Guy’s Chess Club Founder, Arthur L. Johnson. The games were more than just competition, they symbolized the shared values of discipline, critical thinking, and perseverance that both basketball and chess demand.

Seeing a member of the Detroit Pistons sit across the chessboard from a local community leader sent a powerful message: Detroit is strongest when its people come together. Whether on the basketball court or over a chessboard, meaningful connections are created when individuals from different backgrounds unite through a common passion.

Throughout the evening, spectators gathered around the boards, taking photos, cheering on players, and enjoying the welcoming atmosphere that has become a signature of Wise Guy’s Chess Club events. Many participants were inspired by the interaction between Smith and Johnson, proving that chess has the unique ability to bridge generations, industries, and communities.

Make Your Move Mondays was more than just a chess event; it was a celebration of unity, togetherness, and the vibrant spirit of Detroit. The presence of Tolul Smith reinforced the idea that community engagement matters and that influential figures can play an important role in uplifting local initiatives that create positive spaces for learning, fellowship, and fun.

As Wise Guy’s Chess Club continues its summer series at the Nick Gilbert Way, this memorable opening night has already set the tone for what promises to be an incredible season. If the first event was any indication, Make Your Move Mondays is quickly becoming one of Detroit’s newest destinations where strategy meets community and every move brings people together.
