#WisdomWednesdays Juneteenth BLITZ tournament

Victory of Kishore Dev from India, who earned the title of Wise Guy’s Chess Club Champion of the Month after winning the Grocery Gambits Thanksgiving “Tactics & Turkeys” Blitz Tournament at Rivertown Market. With sharp strategy and impressive speed, Kishore dominated the Round Robin event, taking home a $100 gift card, a Thanksgiving turkey, and well-deserved bragging rights.

As part of our ongoing #WisdomWednesdays series, this event brought together players of all ages and skill levels, showcasing the strategic brilliance and camaraderie that chess has within our community.

Wise Guy’s Chess Club teamed up with Make A Move LA to bring Make A Move Detroit — a one-of-a-kind chess tournament — to Downtown Detroit’s Robert C. Valade Park on July 19th. The event featured over 15 competitors battling for a chance to qualify for the final tournament in Compton, LA, where players will compete for $10,000. What made this tournament truly unique was its fiery twist — when a player loses, their king is set on fire, symbolizing that only one true king remains. Congratulations to Andrew “Quiet Storm” Jackson, who took 1st place and $200, earning his spot to represent Detroit in Compton this January!

Partnered with Decked Out Detroit x Bedrock Detroit we kicked off the first Make Your Move Mondays at Nick Gilbert Way with an incredible turnout, nonstop chess action, and an unforgettable summer atmosphere in the heart of Downtown Detroit.

In the vibrant Northend neighborhood of Detroit, a new initiative is taking shape, uniting two powerful forces for community engagement: Wise Guy’s Chess Club and The Detroit People’s Food Co-Op. Together, they are launching “Make Your Move Mondays,” a community chess night designed to bring people together through the love of the game.

Wise Guy’s Chess Club has partnered with the historic Michigan Central Station to host Strategic Sundays, a monthly series of free community chess events held since June. Welcoming players of all ages and skill levels, these gatherings offer more than just a game — they invite the community to experience the incredible restoration of Detroit’s iconic train station, once abandoned for 36 years. As the Michigan Central reopens its doors as a symbol of renewal, Wise Guy’s Chess Club is proud to make its own mark on history by uniting people through chess, culture, and community in one of the city’s most legendary landmarks.

From playing chess with local youth to signing autographs and taking photos, Terrion’s presence turned an already impactful community event into an unforgettable experience centered on connection, inspiration, and opportunity.
